As sure as spring follows winter, it will soon be time again for the Annual Blessing of the Bock Festival. This long running festival (23 years) will benefit the Museum of Beer & Brewing, and include the traditional Blessing of the Bock ceremony, and live polka music for your enjoyment. The ritual, during which clergy bless the traditional beer of spring, has roots dating back centuries. It was common for monasteries to brew bock beers, a darker-colored, higher-alcohol content beer, as a special drink to share around Lent. A large selection of Bock beers from all over the Midwest will be available. Meet the brewers: many brewers from Wisconsin and Illinois microbreweries and brewpubs will be in attendance. Brewers and homebrewers, please bring your beer to be blessed in our tradition. See displays from the Museum of Beer & Brewing and other breweriana collectors. Food will be available for purchase. Homebrew entries should be brought to the Purple Foot (3167 S. 92nd St. Milwaukee, WI) by 5:00 pm on Friday, March 9. There will be a charge of $5 per entry. There will be 3 categories judged in this BJCP sanctioned competition. The categories are Maibock/Helles (5A), Traditional Bock (5B), and Dopplebock (5C). Each homebrew entry will receive one free admission to the event. |
